Brian is an Easterseals staff favorite and it’s hard to not smile when he is in the Windsor Outpatient Therapy Office. He is always quick with a greeting, a story, an observation or a suggestion on how to fix something. This was not always the way for Brian who received special education services in school and started coming to Easterseals at the request of his mother. His mom Carla thought he would benefit from Speech Therapy and after research she found Easterseals.
Brian was unable to introduce himself by name when he started speech therapy but now he can! Not being able to introduce himself was tough since he is very social. He is now working on clearly articulating other names that are important to him. In therapy, he makes personalized communication cards so he can order independently at his favorite restaurants. Brian now gets excited to show people his cards and uses them effortlessly to share his stories with others. In November, Brian was named Easterseals Capital Region & Eastern Connecticut Patient of the Year. He made a communication page to tell others about his award and proudly walks around showing his new plaque.
Due to his success in Speech Therapy, staff thought it would be great to get Brian involved in Occupational Therapy since he said he loved cooking. Click here to see Brian making coffee! Brian can now make sandwiches, eggs, pancakes, waffles, coffee and more. His skills are increasing and he is becoming more independent. And that makes life a little easier for his family.
